Electrical faults are where diagnostic labour disappears. The harness gets blamed because it is the one component nobody can easily test, and in coastal Mumbai humidity it is often genuinely part of the problem. But the fault is usually at a joint rather than along a wire, and knowing the difference is the whole job.
Where faults actually occur. In rough order of frequency: connectors, particularly the multi-pin blocks behind the headlamp and under the seat, where green copper corrosion and spread female pins are routine; earth points, especially the frame earth and the engine earth strap; chafe points where the loom passes the steering head, the frame tube edges and the swingarm pivot, and where the handlebar section flexes through every steering movement; the fuse box and its blade contacts; and previous repairs made with twisted joints and insulation tape, which oxidise and go high-resistance within a monsoon.
How the symptoms read. Intermittent faults that come and go with vibration or with the steering position point at a connector or a chafe point. Several unrelated circuits misbehaving together points at a shared earth. Bulbs blowing repeatedly points at a charging fault or a bad earth, not at bad bulbs. A starter that clicks but does not turn is usually voltage drop across corroded terminals or a poor earth rather than a dead motor.
Test for voltage drop, not continuity. This is the single most useful habit in two-wheeler electrics. A continuity beep only proves that a few strands of copper are still joined - enough to beep, nowhere near enough to carry headlamp or starter current. Instead, put the circuit under load and measure the voltage difference across the suspect section. A healthy connector or earth should show almost nothing. A few tenths of a volt across a single connector, or anything meaningful across an earth, is your fault, and it will never show on a continuity test.
Check the earths before anything else. Battery negative terminal, the engine or frame earth strap, and the lamp and instrument earth points. Undo them, clean both faces back to bright metal, refit tight and grease them. A surprising share of harness replacements would have been solved at this step, and it costs ten minutes.
Repair properly or not at all. Where a single wire or connector has failed, a soldered joint with adhesive-lined heatshrink and dielectric grease in the connector body is a permanent repair. Twisted wire and insulation tape is not - it is a fault that has been rescheduled, and in a wet season it comes back. Route and secure the repaired section so it cannot chafe or hang on its own weight.
When the harness genuinely has to go. Multiple previous splices along the same loom; insulation that has gone hard and cracks when you flex it; melted or discoloured sections, which mean a circuit has been running overloaded; and heavy corrosion that has wicked up inside the insulation from a connector, which you can see as green copper well back from the terminal. At that point a new harness is cheaper than the diagnostic time the old one will keep consuming, and safer - a chafed live feed against a frame tube is a fire.

A single failed wire or connector is worth repairing properly, with a soldered joint, adhesive-lined heatshrink and dielectric grease. Replace the harness when there are multiple old splices, cracked or hardened insulation, melted sections, or corrosion that has spread inside the insulation.
Repeated bulb failure is almost never bad bulbs. Look for a faulty regulator-rectifier allowing overvoltage, or a poor earth at the lamp. Measure the charging voltage at the battery with the engine running before replacing anything else.
