For a workshop counter in Mumbai, the monsoon is not weather - it is a predictable change in what walks through the door. Grit turns into a lapping compound, water finds every connector, and salt-laden air does the rest. The failures are consistent enough to prepare for, and almost all of them are cheaper to pre-empt than to repair.
What fails first, in order. Brake shoes and pads, because wet grit between the friction material and the drum or disc grinds both. The drive chain, which loses its lubricant to the first heavy ride and then rusts and stretches. Electrical connectors and switches, where water plus coastal salt produces green corrosion and intermittent faults. Bulb housings and lamp seals, where water sits inside and kills bulbs repeatedly. Fork oil seals, cut by grit carried on the stanchion. Air filters, after any ride through standing water. Wheel bearings and oil seals. The horn, whose diaphragm rusts. And control cables, where the inner wire corrodes inside the outer and the cable goes stiff before it snaps.
Pre-monsoon jobs worth doing in May. Clean, lubricate and correctly tension the drive chain. Replace brake shoes that are anywhere near the wear mark rather than hoping they last the season. Open the main connector blocks, clean the pins and pack them with dielectric grease. Check the headlamp and tail lamp gaskets and replace any that have gone hard. Replace cables that already feel stiff - they will not improve. Check the tyre tread depth honestly; monsoon Mumbai is not the season for a marginal tyre.
During the season. Rinse with fresh water after riding through standing water, especially the chain, the brake panels and the underside. Re-lubricate the chain weekly rather than monthly. Check the air filter after any deep wade. Keep an eye on the brake wear indicator, because shoes that would have lasted 10,000 km in the dry can be finished in a fraction of that.
After a flooded ride, the one rule that matters. If the engine stopped in deep water, do not try to start it. An engine that has drawn water into the cylinder cannot compress it, and cranking bends a connecting rod or breaks a piston - a small job becomes an engine rebuild in one press of the button. Remove the spark plug, turn the engine over by hand to clear the cylinder, drain and replace the engine oil, check the air filter and airbox for water, and dry the electrics before starting.
Even if it kept running. Change the engine oil if the bike was ridden through water above the level of the exhaust or the airbox intake - water finds its way in and oil turns milky. Check and repack the wheel bearings if there is any roughness. Look at the fork stanchions for grit and at the seals for weeping.
What a workshop should hold from June. Brake shoes in your common sizes, brake and clutch cables, chain lubricant, drive chain kits, bulbs across the common ratings, brake light switches, fork oil seals and dust seals, air filter elements, and horn assemblies. These are the lines that empty first every year, and being out of any one of them sends a customer to whoever is not.
On brake parts in particular. Monsoon is the wrong season to fit unbranded friction material. Wet performance and a stable friction coefficient are exactly what a cheap set gives up, and they give it up at the worst possible moment.
