Both parts are called filters and that is roughly where the similarity stops. One protects combustion, the other protects bearings. They fail differently, they are checked differently, and the interval printed in the owner manual was not written for stop-start traffic in a coastal city.
What the air filter is actually doing. An engine swallows something in the order of ten thousand litres of air for every litre of fuel it burns. Every gram of grit in that air ends up between the piston ring and the bore. Mumbai adds construction dust, brake dust and salt-laden coastal air to the ordinary load. A choked element does not stop the engine - it richens the mixture, and the symptoms arrive as complaints rather than warnings: mileage down, black smoke, a flat top end, hard starting when hot.
What the oil filter is actually doing. It traps wear metal and carbon before the oil pump sends it back through the bearings and up the bore. It cannot be cleaned and it has a finite capacity. Once it is full, the bypass valve opens and unfiltered oil circulates - the engine keeps running exactly as before, which is precisely why this is dangerous. Nobody notices, and the wear accelerates quietly.
Realistic intervals for city use. Inspect the air filter every 2,500 to 3,000 km rather than waiting for the service. A pleated paper element in Mumbai traffic is usually finished between 8,000 and 10,000 km, well before the book number. A washable foam element wants cleaning and re-oiling around every 3,000 km. Check it immediately after any ride through standing water. The oil filter goes with every oil change, without exception - running a second oil change on the same element saves the price of a filter and spends it later on a bore.
Paper against foam. Dry pleated paper filters best and cannot be washed - petrol, diesel or detergent destroy the resin binding the pleats and the element passes dust from then on, looking perfectly fine. Oiled foam is reusable but only if it is oiled correctly: too little oil and it filters almost nothing, too much and the excess migrates into the carburettor or throttle body. Neither type is better in the abstract. What matters is that whoever services it treats it the way that type needs.
The mistake that ends engines. Blowing a paper element out from the outside with a compressed-air gun. It looks clean afterwards and it is ruined - the pleat media ruptures in places too small to see, and the engine then breathes unfiltered air for the rest of the element life. If a filter is dirty enough to need air, it is dirty enough to replace. An element costs a small fraction of a rebore, a piston kit and the labour.
Check the filter before you touch the carburettor. A large share of the poor-mileage and rough-running jobs that come to a workshop as carburettor problems are a choked air filter. Cleaning a carburettor that was never the fault produces a bike that runs the same, a customer who thinks nothing was done, and a return visit. Look at the element first - it takes a minute.
